Can You Drink Duty-Free Alcohol On A Flight? Here’s The Rule

Imagine this: you're flying in an airplane, 30,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by clouds, sipping your favorite drink, and either gazing out the window or enjoying a show. How cool is that? But have you ever wondered if you can bring and drink your own alcohol on a flight? This question may have crossed your mind before. So what's the answer? Keep reading to find out if you can consume duty-free alcohol on a flight and learn about the related rules.

Can You Drink Duty-Free Alcohol On A Flight 2026 Rules

The answer is NO! According to universal policies, you cannot consume duty-free alcohol on a flight. Regardless of the alcohol brand or the airport of purchase, no commercial flight to, from, or within India allows the consumption of duty-free alcohol onboard. Airline regulations strictly do not allow passengers from consuming alcohol that they have bought themselves. This is not allowed even if it is packed in Security Tamper Evident Bags (STEB). You are only allowed to drink alcoholic beverages that are served by the flight attendants.

DGCA Rules For Carrying Alcohol And Consumption

DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has made rules that strictly prohibit in-flight consumption of alcohol on both domestic and international flights. The only exception is when it is served by the crew.

When flying from one city to another, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) allows passenger to carry up to five liters of alcohol each. This includes beverages like whisky, vodka, rum, gin, and wine. It is important to note that the alcohol content must be between 24% and 70% Alcohol By Volume (ABV). Any drink that is above 70% ABV is considered a fire hazard and hence is very clearly and strictly prohibited.

While the DGCA discourages carrying alcohol in hand luggage, the rules of airlines differ. Passengers are allowed to carry alcohol, but consuming it during the flight is not allowed. Those who violate this regulation may face penalties. This can include fines of up to INR 100,000 or removal from the flight.

You may buy liquor at an international airport duty-free shop, but the packaging of the same becomes important if you have a connecting domestic flight in India. The bottles must remain sealed in the bags. If you happen to open them before boarding, get ready to lose it at the next security check.

Penalty For Drinking Your Own Alcohol On Plane In India

Passengers are not allowed to opened or consumed their own alcoholic beverages, including duty-free purchases, during the flight. But many people do not to understand this, and hence DGCA has imposed some penalties.

  • Alcohol Confiscation
  • Denied boarding.
  • Fines and potential imprisonment depending on the severity.
  • Legal action for unruly behavior.

While airlines are allowed to serve alcohol, they must take care of the consumption too. This is to prevent dangerous intoxication at altitude. At this level, the alcohol affects the body faster due to cabin pressure and reduced oxygen.

Summing Up

According to policy, opening duty-free or any personal liquor is not allowed in flight. You can consume the ones served by the cabin crew. Make sure you keep all the regulations in mind.
