More than 80 years ago, Wilhelm Mast’s son Curt steered the family’s vinegar factory business and wine shop in a completely different direction. He spent several years perfecting the Jagermeister recipe. Made with 56 natural ingredients, including herbs, roots, and spices, the herbal liqueur was launched in the German market in 1935.
With 35% alcohol by volume content or 70-proof, Jagermeister was initially marketed towards hunters. Its taste found success in other market categories, then outside Germany, and soon, all over the world. In fact, the word ‘Jägermeister’ is German for ‘Master Hunter’, where ‘Jäger’ means ‘hunter’ and ‘Meister’ means ‘master/expert’. The name was chosen by Curt Mast to reflect his love for hunting and in honor of St. Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters.
Not only does the drink pay homage to the patron saint’s legend, but the bottle and logo have also been designed to replicate the same. The saint’s vision of a stag with a cross inspired the brand’s now iconic logo.
When it comes to the bottle design, there is an interesting story you must know. Curt Mast was looking for a bottle that could ‘take a beating’. To find that perfect bottle, he tested differently shaped bottles by dropping them on his oak floorboards until one finally passed the test. That bottle is now the iconic Jägermeister bottle, noted for its deep green color and the prominent labeling.
There are many different ways to drink Jagermeister. Have it in the form of ice-cold shots or stir it up in a variety of cocktails. Here are a few ways in which you can enjoy your bottle of Jagermeister as per the brand’s official website.

Ask any of your friends who drink Jagermeister what the most popular way to drink this liqueur is. It is highly likely that you’ll get a majority vote on a ‘Jagerbomb’. For those unversed, a Jagerbomb is a mixed drink made by dropping a shot of Jagermeister into an energy drink, usually Red Bull!
While a Jagerbomb is definitely a popular and fun way to have this herbal liqueur, there are a few more ways to serve Jagermeister.
Jagermeister goes well with carbonated sodas, energy drinks, or even natural (clear) juices such as apple juice, orange juice, or passion fruit juice.
In terms of food pairings, Jagermeister pairs well with foods that are high in spice, rich, and savory. Think of BBQ chicken wings, Indian curries, strong cheeses, as well as dark chocolate. These flavors balance the intensity and earthiness, and sweetness of Jagermeister.
Jagermeister is not just a drink meant to be bombed with Red Bull; sometimes it’s meant to be savored and sipped elegantly. Sometimes it’s meant to be had as a shot, bursting with energy! Whether you like your drink in a cocktail or ice cold, we have helped you with information on how you can enjoy Jägermeister. So what are you waiting for? Time to enjoy Jagermeister, drink your way!
Yes, Jagermeister is a fairly strong liqueur. It has an ABV of 36% which is more than most wines and beers and is comparable to that of vodka, gin, and whisky.
The best way to drink Jagermeister is quite subjective, depending on how you like your Jagermeister. You can have it neat, as a Jagerbomb, as an ice cold shot, or even in cocktails.
While there is no such hard and fast rule requiring you to store Jagermeister in the fridge, freezing the drink certainly helps it achieve a silkier, smoother mouthfeel.
