Ever since COVID hit the world, there has been an increase in products being blended with Ayurveda. From food products to even soaps, but did you ever think about Ayurveda being blended with vodka? Well, a Malayali entrepreneur not only imagined this possibility but actually made it, and today is garnering accolades and recognition for the same. Yes, you read that right, we are talking about Midhu Mohan, who introduced the world’s first ayurvedic vodka- Ayurvod. Here’s everything you must know about it.
Known as the world’s first Ayurvedic vodka liqueur, Ayurvod is a fusion of Indian herbs and spices with Polish wheat vodka. The fusion has over 75 herbs and spices from Indian Ayurveda created by Midhun Mohan. He is a Malayali entrepreneur, a native of Kodungallur in Thrissur, living in Warsaw, Poland. This vodka-based herbal liqueur idea struck his mind when he went barhopping with his friends. This liqueur with an innovative herbal profile won gold at the 2025 Warsaw Spirits Competition.
Midhun Mohan tried a European herbal liqueur that claimed to use Indian spices but lacked authentic ayurvedic ties. He observed that India lacked a global botanical liqueur rooted in its Ayurvedic heritage while nations like Poland boast such spirits.
He self-taught alcohol production, understood distillation, and consulted Ayurvedic experts. He then visited distilleries and pitched this idea of fusing Ayurveda with a spirit.
While the large distilleries refused to try this idea, the smaller Polish ones loved it for its creativity. After many trials of blending Polish wheat vodka with Indian herbs and spices, they finally launched Ayurvod. The name itself means fusion of “Ayur” (ayurved) and “Vod” (vodka).
With 40% ABV (alcohol by volume), the brand, for now, is focusing on its plans to increase visibility in Europe. They do have plans to enter the Indian market in the near future.
Ayurvod has a nice and complex mix of various ayurvedic ingredients, which are known for their herbal notes and warmth. This includes cinnamon, gooseberries (amla), dried ginger, star anise, turmeric, dried grapes, clove, cardamom, cumin, black pepper, mace or javitri, and coriander.
This ayurvedic vodka offers a very strong herbal aroma, which evokes India’s earthy Ayurveda roots. The palate offers spicy warmth from pepper, cloves, and ginger, which is balanced by the cinnamon’s depth and cardamom’s sweetness. It also has amla and turmeric, which offer medicinal as well as a tangy touch.
The jaggery offers a rich and caramel-like finish without using sugar. It has mace and star anish which offer nutty undertones with licorice hints. This liqueur is bold with Ayurvedic ingredients but also smooth with layered complexity. It has a floral yet pungent kick with dry spices, which is perfect to be consumed neat, on the rocks, or used in cocktails. The fusions blend East and West traditions, offering an exotic, fun sip.
Ayurvod is an amazing herbal liqueur that surprisingly blends Polish wheat vodka with 75 Indian herbs and spices. Though the ingredients are bold in nature, the drink is smooth on the palate. Can’t wait for it to hit the Indian markets.
