The flavor profile is quite complex but very well-suited for the Indian palate. If you’ve tried a Bloody Mary before, the taste of Michelada is reminiscent of it. The lemon and spices also make it taste a little like nimbu paani but with the tanginess of tomato juice and the bitter notes of hops from the beer.
This beer cocktail also has a great base for experimentation. You can mix and match a variety of different combinations of sauces and spice powders. You can even try to powder the rim with chaat masala! The only limit is your imagination.

As mentioned previously, the origin of the drink was in Mexico. However, there is some confusion about the precise origin story. There are two that are most popular. One simply suggests that Michelada is a portmanteau of the Spanish words ‘Mi’, ‘chela’, and ‘Helada’. This literally translates to my ice-cold beer. This legend suggests that over time, the name became Michelada.
The other origin story is a bit more interesting. The story starts in the 1960s at a club in San Luis Potosí called Club Deportivo Potosino. It said that a man, whose name was Michel Esper, regularly visited this club. His drink of choice was beer with a lemon, salt, and ice.
He preferred this drink to be served in a cup called ‘chabela’ along with a straw. His drink caught the attention of a number of other guests at the club. They were piqued by this peculiar preparation of beer and wanted to try it themselves.
So, they, too, started ordering the drink, but when ordering, they called it Michel’s limonada or lemonade. If the legend is to go by, as time went by, the drink was then shortened to ‘Michelada,’ and bartenders started experimenting with various sauces in the drink. This led to the beer cocktail Michelada being invented in the way we know it today.
