Broadway is the kind of place where the building does half the talking. It dates to 1937 and sits inside the old Broadway Hotel on Ganesh Chandra Avenue, close to Chandni Chowk. High ceilings, old fans, wooden furniture and those slightly worn-in interiors give it a very different feel from the polished bars that have appeared across Kolkata in recent years.

Shaw Brothers, better known as Chhota Bristol, is not trying to become anybody's trendy weekend bar. This Esplanade institution is the kind of place people visit because they specifically want the old Kolkata drinking experience, complete with inexpensive pours, a crowded room and plenty of noise.
The bar's history stretches back well over a century, and older accounts describe its unusual table-sharing setup and no-frills approach. It has long been one of the city's inexpensive drinking spots, although its rules and operating arrangements make it a rather different experience from a conventional pub. But, the only take is that, women are not allowed inside this bar.

It is not pretending to be a cocktail destination. You get familiar food, beer, spirits and a comfortable place to sit, which is really the point.

What I find most interesting about Kolkata's old bars is that they don't seem too bothered about keeping up with whatever the latest drinking trend happens to be. There is no desperate attempt to make everything Instagram-friendly. You sit down, order a drink, get some food, and somehow an hour turns into three. That slightly unhurried, conversation-heavy way of drinking feels very Kolkata to me, and honestly, it is something the newer bars could learn from.
Kolkata's old-school drinking culture lives on in places where the drink is only part of the evening. Olypub, Broadway, Shaw Brothers, Mocambo, Trincas, New Empire and Moulin Rouge each offer a different version of that heritage.
